Time

Time is a continued progress of living or events in the past, future and present.
The main units of time are: seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years decades etc.

Three different ways we investigated to measure time are: Water clock, sand clock, and pendulum.

The water and sand clocks were made using plastic cups and the pendulum was made using a small weight tied to a rope.

With the water clock, a hole was drilled in the bottom of a plastic cup and there were lines which were used to measure how long it would take to get to one mark from another.

The same process was the same for the sand clock.

The water clock measured time by how long it took for the water to reach a mark. The same thing for the sand clock. The pendulum measured time by how many times is swung.
There are many other ways to measure time, but water clocks, sand clocks and pendulums are a good way to measure time without electricity.

LI: to investigate units of time.

  1. Hello David,
I have read your blogpost and found it was well detailed and easy to understand. You seem to have a good idea and understanding of the different non-standard ways to tell time. Do you know of any other tools to tell non-standard time? How and when would you use that tool?

    1. Greetings Bella,

Thank you for the kind feedback. I think singing is one of the best ways to tell time in a non-standard way. I would sing a song like happy birthday one or two times while washing my hands to measure how long it takes. Why is it important to measure time using a non-standard tool?

    2. Kia Ora David,
What an interesting answer, I agree that singing can be used to measure time as well. I think it is important to measure time using non-standard tools to be able to keep track of the time without using clocks, watches or phones. This is important because in some situations, people may not know how to tell time on clocks, or they might have forgotten to bring their phone with them. What is measuring time in a non-standard way?

  2. Hi Bella,

Thank you for replying. Measuring time using non-standard tools means being able to measure time without using the everyday objects we use to tell time such as clocks. Some non-standard tools are pendulums, water clocks and singing.I have learnt a lot about non-standard measuring in this conversation. I enjoyed comment threading with you.
